As of 9 April 2023, just four months after the introduction of digital-only reports, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has returned to producing printed Diamond Dossier reports.
All diamonds submitted to GIA laboratories for the Diamond Dossier service on or after 9 April, as well as all diamonds already held by the Institute on this date, will be returned with a printed GIA Diamond Dossier report.
The printed reports will follow the same structure as those issued prior to January 2023 – when GIA introduced digital-only reports.
The institute has confirmed that it will, at no cost and upon request, provide a printed GIA Diamond Dossier to the submitting client for diamonds that have received a digital-only report between January and April this year.
Clients who prefer a paperless format will still be able to choose the digital version of the Diamond Dossier report and the digital Report Access Card.
GIA has made the decision to return to printed reports following concerns raised by the institute’s clients, manufacturers, brokers, wholesalers, brands, and retailers about the challenges of integrating digital-only reports into existing processes.

Concerns raised highlighted the potential for disruptions to regular business operations, as well as the possibility of a negative impact on consumer trust.
GIA senior vice president and chief operating officer, Pritesh Patel said: “We did not adequately anticipate the challenges of adopting the digital-only GIA Diamond Dossier report.
“GIA will continue to provide the printed reports that enhance consumer trust, while working to develop robust, secure and compelling digital versions of all our reports.”
Report information will continue to be available in the GIA App and on GIA’s online Report Check Service and API.
Clients can now request a printed version of their GIA Diamond Dossier, for any diamonds that received a digital-only report, at no additional cost.
Any printed report requests should be submitted to the GIA directly and must include the original report number and the submitting client’s name.
